2022 Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes Handicapping
Four big graded-stakes races are on tap for Saturday afternoon at Belmont Park, including the (G1) Belmont Derby Invitational.
Long known as the Jamaica Handicap and run at 1 1/8 miles, the Belmont Derby Invitational is now run at 1 1/4 miles on the Belmont inner turf course. The race is open to horses age three, and for 2022 has drawn a large and international field of 13 starters with lots of excellent betting value.
Odds listed here are provided by the Belmont track handicapper.
2022 Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Stone Age Race Odds: 9-2
The Irish bred Stone Age ships over to make his first US start after running sixth in the 1 1/2 mile Group 1 Cazoo (formerly Epson) Derby, the biggest race for three-year-olds racing on turf in the UK.
Prior to that he had reeled off two consecutive wins, the most recent being an impressive 5 1/2 length win in the (G3) Derby Trial. He also has a runner-up finish in a Group 1 effort in France. He’s one of only two in this field with wins at the distance.
Irish trainer Aiden O’Brien and jockey Ryan Moore teamed up to win the race last year, O’Brien’s second victory.
2022 Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Nations Pride Race Odds: 5-1
The second Irish-bred in the field, Nations Pride also exits the Cazoo Derby where he ran eighth. That was his first time running out of the money in six lifetime starts. He had gone into that race off a streak of four consecutive wins, although only the last of those was at the stakes level.
In a bit of an unusual move, he went from a runner-up finish in his maiden race right into allowance-level company where he was an immediate winner on the all-weather surface.
Charles Appleby is the trainer, Frankie Detorri is the rider.
2022 Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Tiz The Bomb Race Odds: 6-1
Tiz The Bomb was nominated for the Kentucky Derby this year and managed to grab enough qualifying points to make the field, so there’s no blaming the connections for taking a shot at the run for the roses. Eventually he ran ninth.
But the fact is, he has shown much better results racing on turf, and in fact scored his only Derby points qualifying win on the synthetic track at Turfway Park, which is much closer to turf racing than is dirt.
He previously had wins on the turf in the (G2) Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland and the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile Stakes. Now he gets back on his best surface.
He’s trained by Ken McPeek, jockey Dylan Davis will be in the irons.
2022 Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Emmanuel Race Odds: 6-1
The lightly-raced Emmanuel made the first four of his five lifetime starts on dirt, and was most successful when running third in the (G1) Bluegrass Stakes, where he was beaten 6 1/4 lengths by Zandon who then went on to run third in the Kentucky Derby.
Last out he was switched to turf for the first time and very much found his footing, taking the field wire-to-wire to win the (G2) Pennine Ridge Stakes going 1 1/8 miles on this Belmont inner turf course.
Trainer Todd Pletcher won the race in 2009. Irad Ortiz Jr. will ride.
Here’s My 2022 Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes Free Pick.
While I’m always a bit shy of horses that are making their very first start in the US after shipping over from the UK or Ireland, I’m leaning toward the Irish-bred shippers in here, and thinking they may even finish 1-2.
On paper Stone Age has been racing at a higher class level than Nations Pride, and did finish two spots ahead of him in the Cazoo. However, one of the issues that face horses from over the pond when they come to the US is much firmer turf – which they’re likely to get at Belmont – and it’s notable that all Stone Age has never raced on a surface rated better that good.
On the other hand, Nations Pride has a pair of wins on relatively firm all-weather. I also love the fact he’s three-for-three at the distance, and I’ll use him for the win.
