Horse Racing Pick & Prediction: Bald Eagle Derby

When you talk about a three-year-old turf race this weekend, most racing fans’ minds will immediately go to the $1,000,000 Grade I Caesars Saratoga Derby Invitational Stakes. Before getting to that race, I think we ought to try to make some money on another turf race restricted to three-year-olds.

The Bald Eagle Derby is a 9.5 furlong (1 and 3/16 miles) turf race at Laurel Park. 6 geldings and one colt (7 total) are entered to compete for the $100,000 purse. The race (9 of 10) is set to go postward at 4:45 pm (ET). Since the turf course at Laurel Park plays fairly, we have to figure out how the pace will take shape.

The weather forecast for the day is 88 degrees and humid with a thunderstorm. In a somewhat short field, I will be highlighting three contenders. The weather may have an effect on some of these horses, but hopefully they can beat the heat and stay healthy.

Betting Preview: (1) Timo

In this race, my top pick and my longshot pick are one in the same (1) Timo. This gelded son of Temple City has only raced one other time in his career; a 5th place finish in a maiden special weight at Saratoga.

From a speed figure standpoint, this effort was pretty close to the top turf speed figures of his opponents. If he is able to take a step forward, he has a very good shot of landing in the winners’ circle. He gets the services of the top jockey at the meet, Jevian Toledo.

Also, his trainer Jonathan Thomas hits at a very high rate in a horse’s second route race. I really hope that come post time; this gelding is near his 10-to-1 morning line.

Betting Preview: (7) Undercover Kitty

I think the lone speed in this race might be (7) Undercover Kitty. This gelded son of Kitten’s Joy has won his last two races (both on dirt) in front running fashion. His two turf efforts do not jump off the page, but he might be a different horse now with his change in tactics.

Jockey Horacio Karamanos will need to try to ration his speed because this race is a full furlong longer than this gelding has ever run. His 6-to-1 morning line feels like a square price.

Betting Preview: (3) Tommy Bee

Out of the two heavy morning line favorites, I like (3) Tommy Bee better. This son of Medaglia d’Oro has a win against allowance company at Keeneland and most recently took 3rd in a graded stakes race at Delaware Park.

When you look deeper into his past performance, it appears that this colt wants more ground, so the 9.5 furlongs should suit him. Although there is a good chance that this horse can win, I don’t want to eat chalk in the win pool given his 7-to-5 morning line.

Spooky Express Free Pick: Win (1) Timo
