MAC Football outlook for Miami Ohio
Miami Ohio is our best bet to win the MAC in 2022, and the RedHawks begin their season with a trip to Kentucky. Although the start of the year is difficult, they have an easier conference schedule, and their toughest matchup will be at Northern Illinois and a home meeting against Kent State.
Head coach Chuck Martin is entering his ninth season in charge, and he helped Miami Ohio win the MAC in 2019, which marked their third conference title. We predict Martin will utilize an offense that averaged 282.6 passing yards (1st in MAC) and 29.1 points per game in 2021. Although they lost a few key players from their defense that allowed 23.9 points per game (2nd in MAC), Martin brought in multiple replacements via the transfer portal. The most notable transfer is Corey Suttle from Iowa State, and the 6′4″ defensive lineman should be a focal point for the RiverHawks’ pass rush.
Starting QB Brett Gabbert will return in 2022 after throwing for over 3,600 yards, 32 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2021, and four of the five starting offensive linemen will return for Miami Ohio. Additionally, the RiverHawks’ backfield will consist of four returning freshman backs and sophomore Tyre Shelton, who combined for over 1,400 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2021. We expect Martin to utilize the run game a bit more in 2022 as they averaged just 143.0 yards per game (8th in MAC) last year, which caused them to lose multiple close matchups.
Expert pick and prediction for MAC Football winner: Miami Ohio (+380 at FanDuel Sportsbook)
Miami Ohio finished 6-6 in 2021, but they suffered a five-point loss to Minnesota, a one-point loss to Eastern Michigan and Kent State, and a two-point loss to Ohio. They finished 5-3 in conference play, and their three losses came by a combined four points. The offense should be just as efficient this season, and they were fortunate to avoid Toledo and Central Michigan in their conference schedule.
Kent State and Western Michigan are their two toughest divisional games, but they’re at home, and the RiverHawks should win both contests. A November road trip to Northern Illinois will likely end in a defeat, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if that’s their only conference loss. Therefore, we predict Miami Ohio will win the MAC because they have the easiest path to the title game and should take care of business in the MAC Championship.
